WGCDR Samantha Freebairn
WING COMMANDER | ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE
Session 3.1: National Drone Defence Industries Forum
Wing Commander Samantha Freebairn is a former C-130H Hercules and C-17 Globemaster pilot, with experience flying combat and humanitarian relief missions. She wrote the policy, which enabled her return to active duty flying after having children, was the first women in Australia to instruct pilots in the C-17A simulator and is currently the Deputy Director of the Australian Air Force Cadets aviation activities.
In 2014, Samantha won the QLD Telstra Business Women’s Award in Business Innovation for the Graduate Pilot Scheme, which incentivises military aviation to women who had never previously considered it. This helped in successfully doubling women pilot numbers in the Air Force in 2 years, when they had remained stagnant for the prior 30 years. In 2016, she was named by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader in their list of 100 most influential leaders under 40.
